PPE Compliance at Entry Points

Person detection with helmet/vest classification at one gate, a compliance percentage per shift and snapshot on violation.

Vision AI · MI-VAI-02

A PoE IP camera at one gate and an edge AI inference box running a pre-trained PPE model: helmet, vest and glove compliance per shift, with a snapshot on every violation.

Why PPE compliance cannot be proven today

The problem

Helmet, vest and glove compliance is enforced by supervisors who cannot be at every gate, and it cannot be proven for a safety audit or an insurer. Violations are remembered, not recorded, and the compliance percentage in the safety review is an estimate.

  • Supervisors cannot watch every entry point
  • No evidence of compliance for audits and insurers
  • Repeat offenders and problem shifts are not identified
  • Corrective talks happen on anecdote, not data

The solution

A 2 MP PoE camera at the gate streams to an edge AI box running person detection with helmet, vest and glove classification. Each entry is scored, a compliance percentage is computed per shift and gate, and a snapshot is saved for every violation with the time and gate. Nothing leaves the site.

  • Compliance percentage per gate and per shift
  • Snapshot and timestamp on each violation
  • Optional light or buzzer at the gate on non-compliance
  • Runs on the edge box; video stays on site

How camera-based PPE detection works

  1. Mount. Install one PoE camera covering the entry gate.
  2. Deploy. Run the pre-trained PPE model on the edge box; tune for your PPE colours.
  3. Alert. Set the gate light or supervisor alert on violation.
  4. Review. Report compliance per shift after two weeks and act on outliers.

Pilot architecture

PoE IP camera (2 MP · wide lens) → Edge AI inference box (person + PPE model) → Local safety server (compliance % · snapshots) → EHS dashboard (per gate · per shift)

Video is processed on the edge box and never leaves the plant; only compliance scores and violation snapshots are stored.

Business case: compliance evidence, behaviour change

Ranges are typical figures reported for this class of solution; your pilot establishes the numbers for your plant.

  • Per shift compliance percentage (evidence for audits and insurers)
  • Every violation snapshotted (time, gate, PPE class)
  • Weeks to a measurable compliance lift (once shifts see their own number)
  • 4 – 6 days to a live pilot (one gate)

Who this is for: EHS / safety heads, Security and facilities, Steel, cement, construction, Warehousing and logistics, Any site with mandatory PPE zones, Insurers' safety programmes.

Illustrative case study

Illustrative scenario · not a client reference

A cement-grinding unit's main plant gate in Andhra Pradesh (illustrative)

Set-up. One PoE camera on the turnstile gate, edge box in the security cabin, a red light at the gate on violation, dashboard with the safety officer.

What happened. Helmet compliance measured at 84% in week one, mostly on the night shift; with the gate light and a shift-wise report it reached 97% within a month. The compliance report became part of the monthly safety review and the insurer's site visit.

  • Pilot budget: ₹44,000 hardware
  • Compliance: 84% → 97%
  • Time to lift: ~1 month

FAQ

Does it identify individual workers?

Not in the pilot — it detects people and PPE, not identities. Face recognition is deliberately excluded; violations are handled by gate and shift.

Which PPE can it detect?

Helmets, high-visibility vests and gloves out of the box; goggles, harnesses and boots can be added with a short retraining on your site's images.

Where is the video stored?

Video is processed live on the edge box; only violation snapshots and scores are kept, on site, for the retention period you set.

What does the ₹44,000 cover?

One camera, PoE injector and the edge inference box with a pre-trained model. Installation, additional gates and provider services are quoted after a Request for Quote.
