Why NFC rather than QR codes?

NFC tags survive oil, paint and abrasion better than printed codes and are read with a tap; QR is an option for low-cost items.

Can the app store calibration certificates?

Yes — PDFs are uploaded against each item and shown on tap.

Can we use our own phones instead of rugged handhelds?

Most NFC-capable Android phones work; rugged handhelds are recommended for the shop floor.
